Former President Donald Trump has joined TikTok, a Chinese-owned social media platform that he once attempted to ban during his years in the White House. This unexpected move highlights a change of heart for Trump, who has now embraced the platform that he once deemed a national security threat.

Trump's inaugural TikTok post on Saturday night showcased him waving to fans at an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fight in Newark, New Jersey, accompanied by the song "American Bad A--" by Kid Rock. The video was introduced by UFC CEO Dana White, a Trump friend, who announced, "The president is now on TikTok."

This strategic move appears to be an attempt to connect with younger voters who frequent the platform, as Trump prepares to face President Biden in the 2024 election rematch. The former president's main super PAC, MAGA Inc., has already joined TikTok a few weeks ago.

TikTok, with approximately 170 million users in the United States, offers a potentially fertile ground for Trump's outreach efforts. Internal analysis from TikTok, as reported by the New York Times and Puck, indicates that the platform favors pro-Trump content, with roughly twice as many pro-Trump posts compared to pro-Biden posts.

Despite his current embrace of TikTok, Trump's stance on the platform has undergone a remarkable transformation. In 2020, he attempted to ban the app in the U.S., citing national security concerns. However, his executive order was subsequently blocked by a federal court.

This year, Trump has had a change of heart and has come out in opposition to Biden's potential ban on TikTok. Some of his former top advisers, such as Kellyanne Conway and David Urban, have even advocated for TikTok on Capitol Hill.

Despite Trump's change of heart, many Republicans remain critical of the popular app and urge its Chinese-based parent company to divest. Nevertheless, Trump's entry into TikTok signifies a shift in his strategy to engage with younger voters and tap into a potentially favorable platform ahead of the 2024 election.

It remains to be seen how Trump's presence on TikTok will impact his political aspirations and how his supporters will respond to his embrace of a platform that he once denounced. As the 2024 campaign intensifies, Trump's TikTok presence will undoubtedly be a topic of discussion and scrutiny.
