According to a recent Quinnipiac University poll, the 2024 presidential election is still a toss-up between incumbent President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. The poll indicates that Biden holds a slim one-point lead over Trump, 48% to 47%, among registered voters.

The poll also suggests that a significant number of voters remain undecided, with 19% stating that they could change their minds before casting their ballots. Among Biden's supporters, 15% expressed a willingness to reconsider their choice, while only 8% of Trump's backers indicated the same.

Despite the upcoming presidential debate and Trump's ongoing trial, the poll shows that the race is still highly competitive. Most of the latest national polls indicate that the matchup remains within the margin of error, with neither candidate holding a clear advantage.

The battle for the White House will ultimately depend on the electoral votes of key battleground states, rather than the national popular vote. Trump currently has a slight edge in several recent polls in these crucial states.

Biden and Trump are scheduled to face off in their first debate on June 27 in Atlanta, Georgia. The poll indicates that 72% of respondents believe they will watch the debate, suggesting that it could significantly impact the race.

Over a month after Trump's historic trial began, the poll reveals that seven out of ten respondents are closely following the proceedings. Trump is charged with falsifying business records related to payments he made to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election.

Both Trump's former attorney, Michael Cohen, and Daniels have testified for the prosecution, providing damaging evidence against Trump. The former president has repeatedly denied the charges and claimed the trial is politically motivated.

The poll suggests that the majority of respondents believe the charges against Trump are either very or somewhat serious, while 36% think they are not too serious or not serious at all.

Trump has been fined by the judge in the case for violating a gag order aimed at preventing him from influencing witnesses and jurors. He has also been threatened with jail time for his continued disregard of the court's orders.

The Quinnipiac University poll was conducted between May 16-20, with 1,374 self-identified registered voters nationwide participating. The margin of error for the poll is plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.
