Former Pittsburgh Steelers star Merril Hoge has weighed in on Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's recent concussion and the ongoing debate about his playing future.
In a recent interview, Hoge stated that the best thing for Tagovailoa is to focus on his health and not rush back to play until he is fully recovered. He emphasized that the long-term well-being of the player is paramount.

"The best thing for Tua Tagovailoa is for him to be fully recovered," Hoge said. "He's got a lot of football left to play. He's a young player. He's a great player. He's got a great future ahead of him. I think the best thing for him is to make sure he's fully recovered and ready to go."
Tagovailoa has suffered multiple concussions in recent years, including two in the 2022 season. This has raised concerns among experts and fans about his ability to continue playing football safely.

Some have suggested that Tagovailoa should consider retiring from the NFL to protect his health. However, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Tagovailoa has no plans to retire. Rapoport reported that Tagovailoa is focused on returning to the field when he is healthy.
Hoge acknowledged that each concussion is different and the recovery process varies from player to player. He stressed the importance of Tua and his doctors making the decision about his return to play based on his individual health situation.

"Every concussion is different. The way every player responds to a concussion is different," Hoge said. "He will be healthy enough to play when he is healthy enough to play, when he and his doctors decide that."
Tagovailoa is currently in the process of seeing concussion specialists, as he did in 2022. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has not provided a timeline for Tagovailoa's return, but the team is exploring the possibility of adding a free agent quarterback to bolster the depth in the quarterback room.
McDaniel has also played down the talk of retirement, stating that it is not in the best interest of Tagovailoa and his well-being. He emphasized that the focus should be on his health and recovery.
"I think it would be so wrong of me to even sniff that subject, and it's more in line of actually caring about the human being and that's something that entirely you're talking about his career, right?" McDaniel said. "His career is his, and that's something that I really, really, really wish – I totally understand it, and it's not misplaced."
In 2022, Tagovailoa suffered a concussion against the Buffalo Bills that was initially ruled as a back injury. However, it later became apparent that he had sustained a head injury. This incident raised questions about the team's handling of Tagovailoa's health.
Just days later, Tagovailoa suffered another concussion in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The severity of the hit and his posturing on the ground raised immediate concerns about his well-being. He was stretchered off the field and missed several games.
Tagovailoa returned to play after just two weeks, but he suffered a third concussion in Week 16 against the Green Bay Packers. This concussion ended his season and sparked discussions about his long-term health and the possibility of retirement.
The Dolphins have expressed confidence in Tagovailoa and his ability to bounce back from this latest setback. The team signed him to a massive four-year extension during the offseason. However, his health remains the primary concern.
Tagovailoa's situation is a reminder of the serious health risks associated with football and the importance of player safety. Hoge's advice to prioritize his health and allow him to make the decision about his future based on his own well-being should be taken seriously.
