Two Hikers Drown in Tennessee Creek After Woman Falls and Man Attempts Rescue

A 23-year-old woman and 20-year-old man tragically lost their lives in a hiking incident near Rainbow Lake Trail in Tennessee. The woman slipped into a creek and the man selflessly jumped in to save her, but neither of them resurfaced.

On a fateful Sunday evening in Tennessee, a group of hikers embarked on a leisurely trail towards Rainbow Lake Trail in Signal Mountain. Among them were 23-year-old Greffania Merilus and 20-year-old Gullson Elve, two close companions who shared a passion for outdoor adventures.

As they approached a large creek, one of the women in the group attempted to cross, but tragedy struck as she slipped into a treacherous drop-off and disappeared beneath the water's surface. Without hesitation, Elve surged into the creek to rescue his friend, but the unforgiving current swept both of them away.

Horrified, the remaining hikers frantically called for help, their screams echoing through the desolate wilderness. Within minutes, police and fire personnel raced to the scene, wading into the murky water in a desperate search for the missing pair.

The first responders' grim discovery brought a somber realization. Merilus's body was retrieved from the water and pulled onto land, but despite valiant efforts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The search for Elve continued relentlessly, with officials requesting additional assistance.

"We've got this pretty sign up here that says Rainbow Lake, and it's a beautiful place down there, but they don't know the terrain is rocky and bumpy and can be steep in places," Murdock said. She emphasized the need for additional signage to warn hikers about potential hazards, especially during periods of heavy rainfall when the creek's currents become treacherous.
