A display with sports equipment has been set up at Parliament Square in London to honor the 487 Ukrainian athletes killed since Russia's invasion in the country.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has had a profound impact on the sporting world. Ukrainian athletes have faced immense challenges, with many unable to compete due to the war. In recognition of their sacrifice, a display of sports equipment was set up at Parliament Square in London to honor the 487 Ukrainian athletes killed since the Russian invasion.

The display features a variety of sports equipment, including boxing gloves, basketballs, and swimsuits. Each piece is emblazoned with the name of a fallen athlete. Among those remembered are Oleksandr Pielieshenko, who competed in weightlifting at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and Kateryna Diachenko, an 11-year-old rhythmic gymnast killed in March 2022.

The display is a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the tragic loss of young lives. It also serves as a symbol of hope and resilience, as Ukrainian athletes continue to compete in the face of adversity.

The U.K. government has pledged its support to Ukrainian athletes, providing funding and training facilities. Ukrainian American figure skater Sasha Cohen spoke at the unveiling of the display, expressing her solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

"I've always believed in the power of sport to unite and inspire," Cohen said. "But, today, I'm not just speaking as an athlete. I'm speaking as the daughter of a Ukrainian immigrant, my mother, Galina. I've grown up with stories of Ukraine, our culture, our people, and their resilience."

Cohen added that she was "in awe of the Ukrainian athletes participating in the Olympics" and that their "courage, strength, and determination embodies the spirit of my mother's homeland."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also met with Prime Minister Keir Starmer during his visit to Britain. Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for the U.K.'s support and emphasized the importance of sport in promoting peace and unity.

"Every Ukrainian athlete at the Olympics represents the Ukrainian will to win, Volia," said Heorhii Tykhyi of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. "By acting swiftly and with united efforts, the prospect of a world where Ukrainian athletes and citizens are free from the threats posed by Russia will be a reality."

The Paris Olympics officially begin with opening ceremonies on Friday night. Ukrainian athletes will be competing in a wide range of sports, including boxing, basketball, and swimming. Their presence at the Games is a testament to their indomitable spirit and the unwavering support of the Ukrainian people.
