United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has come under fire for his failure to explicitly condemn Hamas after the terrorist group murdered six hostages, including an American citizen. Critics, including former Israeli Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan, accuse Guterres of downplaying the severity of the murders and not holding Hamas accountable.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is facing a wave of criticism for his failure to explicitly condemn the Hamas terrorist movement for its murders of one American and five Israeli citizens last weekend.

Israel Defense Forces were searching for the six hostages held by Hamas, including Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin, in a tunnel system below Gaza's Rafah city. They discovered all six hostages dead at the hands of the terror group.

Guterres released a statement expressing condolences to the families of the victims and calling for the unconditional release of all hostages. However, he did not specifically condemn Hamas or hold them accountable for the murders.

This omission has sparked outrage from Israeli officials and international critics. Former Israeli Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan accused Guterres of "shredding the UN charter" by downplaying the severity of the murders and not condemning Hamas outright.

Erdan, who left his role as ambassador last month, told Fox News Digital that "the Secretary-General not only has Israeli blood on his hands, but he has American blood on his hands too." He accused Guterres of inaction, despite knowing about the hostage situation and having the power to demand visits from the Red Cross or condemn Hamas.

Anne Bayefsky, director of the Touro Institute on Human Rights and the Holocaust and president of Human Rights Voices, condemned Guterres for "despicably" turning the murders into a win for the terrorists by refusing to name the perpetrators and equating their execution with Israel's efforts to rescue the hostages.

She added that "the United Nations has never specifically condemned Hamas," which highlights the organization's "denial of the right of Israeli self-defense and its promotion of violence against the people of Israel."

Despite calls from critics, Guterres' spokesman has not yet responded to requests for comment.

The scandal is the latest in a series of controversies involving UN agencies showing sympathy for Hamas. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is currently facing a lawsuit in Manhattan for its alleged role in aiding Hamas' October 7 massacre.

UN Watch executive director Hillel Neuer accused Guterres of being unable to name the perpetrators or condemn them for the mass murder of the six hostages. "Why can't you say so? Why can't you condemn them?," wrote Neuer.

Hamas is not on the United Nations' list of terrorist organizations. Fox News Digital has reached out to Israel's current UN ambassador and its foreign ministry for comment.
