A United Airlines flight bound for Seattle was forced to abort takeoff at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport on Sunday afternoon after an engine caught fire. The incident halted arrivals at the busy airport during the Memorial Day travel rush.
Chicago, IL - A United Airlines flight narrowly averted disaster at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport on Sunday when an engine caught fire just before takeoff. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the incident, which occurred around 2 p.m. as United Flight 2091 prepared to depart for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
According to an airport spokesman, the aircraft experienced an "emergency situation" during departure. The critical issue was swiftly contained, and no injuries were reported. The FAA implemented a halt on arrivals into the airport as a precautionary measure.
The plane, an Airbus A320, carried 148 passengers and five crew members. United Airlines assured Fox News Digital that the aircraft was safely escorted to the gate, and passengers disembarked without incident.
"We are working to make alternative travel arrangements for customers," United Airlines stated.
The incident caused temporary disruptions at O'Hare, one of the world's busiest airports. The John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City also experienced a ground stop due to separate reasons.
Witness accounts and footage shared on social media captured the alarming sight of the burning engine. However, the prompt response from airport personnel prevented a more serious outcome.
The Chicago Fire Department and Airbus have been contacted for comment. The FAA is expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident to determine its cause and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The incident highlights the critical role of aviation safety and the importance of timely and effective emergency protocols. It also underscores the need for continuous maintenance and inspection of aircraft to ensure the well-being of passengers and crew.
As the Memorial Day weekend brings a surge in air travel, the United Airlines engine fire serves as a reminder of the potential hazards involved in any form of transportation. However, it also demonstrates the dedication of aviation professionals to ensuring the safety of the skies and the preparedness of emergency responders to swiftly address critical situations.
