Guyana has granted permission for two powerful U.S. F/A-18F Super Hornet jets to fly over its capital, signaling the close military and other forms of cooperation between the two nations. The exercise comes amidst simmering tensions between Guyana and Venezuela over the latter's claim to a large swath of Guyana's territory.
Guyana's government has authorized the U.S. military to conduct a flyover of two F/A-18F Super Hornet jets over its capital city, Georgetown. This unprecedented exercise serves as a testament to the close military and other forms of cooperation between the two countries.
With only three hours' notice given through the American embassy, most residents were caught by surprise as the supersonic jets roared overhead. The flyover comes as tensions escalate between Guyana and Venezuela, its neighboring country.
Venezuela has recently annexed the oil and mineral-rich Essequibo region, a move that has drawn condemnation from Guyana and the United States. President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela has signed a law formalizing the annexation, which Guyana has vehemently protested.
The U.S. has expressed its unwavering support for Guyana in this ongoing dispute. Late last year, the U.S. assisted Guyana with surveillance flights amid threats of invasion from Venezuela.
The military exercise involving the F/A-18F Super Hornets occurred shortly after U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Julie Nethercot visited Guyana for talks. During her visit, Nethercot emphasized the importance of deterring aggression, defeating threats, and responding swiftly to crises.
The U.S. Southern Command has also reiterated its unwavering support for Guyana. The region is awaiting a decision from the World Court on Venezuela's claim to the Essequibo region. However, Venezuela has stated that it does not recognize the court's authority and will disregard any decision issued.
The flyover of the F/A-18F Super Hornets not only demonstrated the close military cooperation between the U.S. and Guyana but also served as a veiled warning to Venezuela against any further aggression.
Guyana has a long-standing relationship with the U.S. and has benefited from various forms of cooperation in areas such as security, education, and economic development. The recent military exercise is a manifestation of these strong ties and reaffirms the U.S.'s commitment to defending Guyana's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
