"Inspectors are working alongside our law enforcement partners, including the Chicago Police Department," the agency said.
The motive for the shooting is unknown. The victim was taken to a local hospital, but his condition is not known.
The shooting comes amid a surge in violence in Chicago. According to the Chicago Police Department, there have been more than 1,200 homicides in the city so far this year.
The shooting has raised concerns about the safety of postal workers. In recent years, there have been several incidents of postal workers being attacked or robbed.
In 2021, a postal worker was shot and killed while delivering mail in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 2020, a postal worker was robbed at gunpoint in Chicago.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is investigating the shooting. The agency said it is committed to protecting postal workers and ensuring the safety of the mail.
"The Postal Inspection Service is the federal law enforcement arm of the U.S. Postal Service," the agency said. "We are responsible for investigating crimes involving the U.S. Postal Service, its employees, and its customers."
The shooting has also raised concerns about the safety of the public. The shooting occurred in a residential neighborhood, and there were several people in the area at the time.
"This was a very dangerous situation," said a neighbor who witnessed the shooting. "I'm just glad that no one else was hurt."
The shooting is a reminder of the dangers that postal workers face on a daily basis. Postal workers are essential workers who provide a valuable service to the community. They deserve to be safe while they are doing their jobs.
