After over 70 days of detention in North Korea, U.S. Army Pvt. Travis King has arrived back on American soil, landing at Joint Base San Antonio early Thursday morning.
U.S. Army Pvt. Travis King, who was held captive in North Korea for over 70 days last year after crossing the Demilitarized Zone, has returned to the United States. King landed at Joint Base San Antonio early Thursday morning, marking a long-awaited homecoming after his release from North Korean custody.
King's detention in North Korea began in July 2023 when he bolted across the heavily fortified border from South Korea. This incident marked the first time an American had been detained in North Korea in nearly five years. King's crossing came shortly after his release from a South Korean prison, where he had served nearly two months on assault charges.

About a week after his release from prison, military officers escorted King to the airport to return to Fort Bliss, Texas, to face disciplinary action, but he surprisingly joined a civilian tour of the Korean border village of Panmunjom instead of boarding the plane. He then made a daring dash across the border, which is heavily guarded and often crowded with tourists.
King's daring escape ended with his detention by North Korea, and he remained in their custody for approximately two months. However, Pyongyang abruptly announced that it would expel him on September 28, and he was subsequently flown back to Texas.

Upon his return to the United States, King faced military charges including desertion and assaulting an officer. He was sentenced to 12 months' confinement after pleading guilty to these charges. However, with time already served and credit for good behavior, King was declared a free man on Friday. He also received a dishonorable discharge from the United States Army.
Nine other offenses that King initially faced, including possession of sexual images of a child, were dismissed under the terms of a plea agreement he reached. King spent a total of 71 days in North Korean custody, an ordeal that raised tensions between the United States and North Korea.

King's attorney, Franklin D. Rosenblatt, expressed relief over his client's return home. "With time already served and credit for good behavior, Travis [is] now free and will return home," Rosenblatt told Fox News.
King's case highlights the ongoing tensions between the United States and North Korea, as well as the risks associated with unauthorized crossings of the Demilitarized Zone. It also underscores the importance of diplomatic efforts to secure the release of Americans detained abroad.
