A Congressional investigation has uncovered evidence suggesting that US taxpayer money may have inadvertently funded the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the Chinese laboratory where the COVID-19 pandemic is believed to have originated. The findings add fuel to the growing suspicions that the virus was a result of a lab accident and that the Chinese government attempted to cover it up.

The Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic has reportedly reviewed classified State Department records that provide "credible evidence" that the COVID-19 virus likely originated from a lab-related incident in Wuhan, China. The documents also indicate that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) may have engaged in efforts to conceal the truth.

Committee Chairman Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, requesting the declassification of the records to shed light on the pandemic's origins for the American public. The letter states that the documents contain "highly pertinent information" that strongly suggests a lab-related accident as the source of COVID-19.

The investigation alleges that US taxpayer funds flowed to Chinese entities conducting coronavirus research prior to the pandemic, potentially contributing to the research that led to the virus's emergence. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has also confirmed these financial links.

The classified materials reportedly suggest a "seamless relationship" between the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), raising concerns about the involvement of the military in virological research.

Rep. Wenstrup emphasized that the American people deserve to know the full extent of the government's evidence regarding the pandemic's origins and urged Blinken to immediately declassify the relevant information. He also requested a staff-level briefing on the records before May 14.

The State Department has not yet responded to requests for comment on the allegations. President Biden signed the COVID-19 Origin Act of 2023, requiring the government to declassify information related to the pandemic's origins.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) released a declassified report in June 2023, stating that the intelligence community remained divided on whether the virus originated from a lab leak or animal contact. However, the US Energy Department and FBI have both concluded that a lab leak is the most likely explanation.

The CIA and one other unidentified agency have not reached a conclusion due to conflicting information and assumptions. Despite the uncertainty, the intelligence community has ruled out genetic engineering and the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 being developed as a biological weapon.

Former intelligence chief John Radcliffe has stated his belief that a lab leak is the "only explanation" for the COVID-19 pandemic, while others have expressed skepticism about the lab leak theory.

The ongoing Congressional investigation into the pandemic's origins is expected to continue, with a focus on uncovering the truth behind the virus's emergence and the potential role played by Chinese entities and US taxpayer funds.
