In a thrilling season opener, the No. 23 USC Trojans emerged victorious over the No. 13 LSU Tigers in a hard-fought 27-20 battle. With both teams entering the game with new eras and high hopes, only one emerged on top, showcasing the potential of the Trojans and the resilience they possess.
As the curtain rose on the 2023 college football season, the stage was set for a captivating clash between two storied programs: the USC Trojans and LSU Tigers. Both teams embarked on new chapters with Miller Moss and Garrett Nussmeier taking the reins as starting quarterbacks, respectively. The Trojans, who bid farewell to Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams, sought to prove their mettle under the guidance of Moss, while the Tigers aimed to make a statement with Nussmeier at the helm.
From the outset, the Trojans asserted their presence on the field. Moss, displaying nerves of steel, orchestrated a clinical drive late in the game, culminating in a game-winning field goal that sealed their victory. The Trojans' offense, led by Moss's impressive passing prowess and Woody Marks's thunderous running, proved too much for the Tigers' defense to handle.

Meanwhile, LSU's offense showed flashes of brilliance, with Nussmeier showcasing his arm strength and accuracy. However, costly penalties and defensive lapses ultimately proved to be their downfall. The Tigers' ill-disciplined display, including an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for pretending to shoot a gun after a touchdown, gifted the Trojans valuable yardage and momentum.
The Trojans' defense also played a pivotal role in their triumph, forcing crucial turnovers and limiting the Tigers' offensive production. Moss's heroics, coupled with a stingy defense, gave the Trojans a well-deserved victory in their season opener.

Moss, in his first game as USC's starting quarterback, displayed composure beyond his years. His 378 passing yards, coupled with Marks' 68 rushing yards and two touchdowns, provided the offense with the firepower needed to overcome LSU's formidable defense.
Nussmeier, despite his impressive passing statistics, was unable to match Moss's late-game heroics. The Tigers' defense, while showing moments of brilliance, was ultimately unable to contain the Trojans' diverse offensive attack.

As both teams look ahead, USC will undoubtedly climb in the rankings after their impressive season-opening performance. They will return home to face Utah State next weekend, eager to continue their winning ways.
LSU, on the other hand, will host Nicholls next weekend. The Tigers will need to regroup and address their discipline issues if they wish to make a statement in their remaining games.
