The USS New Jersey, a Virginia-class fast-attack submarine, marks a milestone as the US Navy's first vessel designed to fully integrate male and female sailors.

The United States Navy has commissioned the USS New Jersey, a Virginia-class fast-attack submarine that holds a significant distinction: it is the first vessel in the fleet designed to fully integrate male and female sailors. The commissioning ceremony took place at the Naval Weapons Station Earle in Middletown, New Jersey, on Saturday.

The USS New Jersey, also known as "Jersey Girl," stands as the third US Navy ship named after the Garden State. It follows the illustrious battleship BB-62, which played a pivotal role in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

With a crew of nearly 135 personnel, the USS New Jersey represents a step forward in gender integration within the Navy. When the service lifted its ban on women in submarines in 2010, concerns arose about the suitability of living quarters and privacy issues. In response, the Navy retrofitted existing subs and designated specific washrooms for female sailors.

The USS New Jersey, however, was designed with gender integration in mind from the outset. It features accommodations that prioritize privacy in washrooms and sleeping areas. Moreover, access to top bunks and overhead valves has been carefully considered to accommodate the height, reach, and strength of both male and female sailors.

"You operate the most complex platform on the planet and you continuously strive for excellence," said Cmdr. Steve Halle, the submarine's commanding officer, addressing the crew during the ceremony. "I'm amazed and humbled at what we have accomplished."

Vice Admiral Robert Gaucher, commander of Submarine Forces Atlantic, emphasized the importance of gender integration for the Navy's future. "Our superior professionalism is enhanced by our crew integration and our diversity," said Halle.

The nuclear-powered submarine boasts a length of 377 feet and a beam of 34 feet. It has the capability to dive to depths exceeding 800 feet and operate at speeds surpassing 25 knots. Its interior spaces are adorned with posters and memorabilia representing the state of New Jersey, including a guitar autographed by renowned musician Jon Bon Jovi.

The USS New Jersey joins the growing ranks of Virginia-class submarines, a crucial element of the Navy's attack fleet. These submarines play a vital role in missions ranging from anti-submarine warfare to intelligence gathering, special operations, and mine warfare.
