The former police chief of Uvalde schools and another former officer face felony charges for their response to the 2022 mass shooting that claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers. These indictments mark a significant development in the investigation into the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.

A grand jury in Uvalde County, Texas, has indicted former schools police Chief Pete Arredondo and former officer Adrian Gonzales on multiple counts of felony child endangerment. This move makes them the first officers to face criminal charges in connection with the May 2022 shooting at Robb Elementary School.

According to the Uvalde Leader-News and the San Antonio Express-News, the indictments allege that Arredondo and Gonzales knowingly placed children in imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death during the shooting. The charges stem from their alleged failure to take appropriate action to protect the children in the school during the attack.

On May 24, 2022, an 18-year-old gunman entered Robb Elementary School and opened fire in a fourth-grade classroom. The shooter remained inside the classroom for over an hour, firing an AR-15-style rifle before he was confronted and killed by officers. A total of 19 children and two teachers were killed in the attack.

Nearly 400 law enforcement officers responded to the shooting, but many were heavily criticized for their delayed response and lack of coordination. Officers waited in the hallway outside the classroom for over an hour, even as the gunman could be heard firing inside.

Following the shooting, separate investigations by the Department of Justice and Texas lawmakers concluded that law enforcement had botched their response to the massacre. The DOJ released a scathing 600-page report earlier this year, detailing numerous failures in training, communication, leadership, and technology that contributed to the tragedy.

Three months after the shooting, Arredondo was fired from his position as police chief. Several other officers involved in the response were also fired.

The indictments against Arredondo and Gonzales mark a significant step in the investigation into the Uvalde shooting. They are the first criminal charges brought against any of the officers involved in the response.

The indictments do not signal the end of the investigation or legal proceedings related to the shooting. Other officers involved may still face charges, and civil lawsuits brought by victims' families are ongoing.

The indictments and the findings of the various investigations have raised serious questions about law enforcement training and response to active shooter situations. These issues are expected to be a focus of ongoing discussions and reforms aimed at preventing similar tragedies in the future.
