CNN's Van Jones praised the energy at the DNC and credited Democrats for having a 'deeper' sense of patriotism, while suggesting Republicans have a "cheaper patriotism."

CNN's Van Jones ignited a discourse on patriotism on Wednesday, asserting that Democrats possess a "deeper" and more "muscular" devotion to their country than Republicans. During his commentary on the third night of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, Jones established a distinction between two tiers of patriotism: a "cheaper" and a "deeper" brand.

According to Jones, Democrats epitomize a "deeper patriotism" that transcends mere jingoism. He emphasized the party's assertion that freedom encompasses not just the absence of taxation or trespass but also the opportunity for a fulfilling existence. To achieve this end, Jones argued that cooperation and a responsible government are essential.

Jones singled out Senator Kamala Harris as an embodiment of this "muscular patriotism." He lauded her fighting spirit and unwavering belief in the American vision of freedom. "She's not afraid to fight for what she believes in," Jones said.

In contrast, Jones painted a different picture of the Republican National Convention (RNC) he attended a month earlier. While he had detected an undeniable "spirit" and excitement reminiscent of Obama's 2008 campaign, Jones found the DNC to be more vibrant and inclusive.

Jones attributed this energy to the DNC's spotlight on a younger generation of leaders and supporters. He observed that the Democratic Party was revitalizing itself by embracing fresh perspectives and invigorating the political landscape.

Reflecting on the speeches by former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday night, Jones waxed eloquent in their praise. He described their words as a "masterful act of leadership" and an "oasis in a spiritual desert."

Jones expressed his admiration for the Obamas' ability to inspire and ignite hope. He asserted that they had transferred the mantle of leadership to Kamala Harris and had fulfilled their artistic duty to reignite the transformative spirit of the movement.

"Biden transferred the machinery of the party to Kamala Harris," Jones observed. "The Obamas renewed the magic of the movement. That's what they were transferring. They did it beautifully. They did it powerfully. Obama used nostalgia in a beautiful way."
