The 2024 vice presidential candidates, Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.) and Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), represent strikingly different perspectives on issues crucial to voters. Their stances on immigration, abortion, gun rights, Israel, and social issues highlight the chasm between the Republican and Democratic parties.
Walz has consistently championed a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and supported legislation granting them expanded rights. He has backed "sanctuary policies," allowing illegal immigrants to obtain drivers' licenses, and supported tuition-free college for undocumented students under the North Star Promise program.
Conversely, Vance advocates securing the southern border by completing the construction of Trump's border wall. He has criticized the Biden administration's handling of the border crisis, calling its policies "horrible."

Vance has long been vocal about his pro-life stance, supporting some national abortion restrictions. He endorses the accessibility of the abortion pill but opposes unrestricted access to the procedure.
Walz has codified abortion rights into Minnesota state law and supports protections for people seeking abortions from out of state. He has emphasized his support for in-vitro fertilization treatments, which he and his wife used before her pregnancy.

While acknowledging that he owns guns, Walz advocates for stricter firearm regulations, including an AR-15 ban and expanded background checks. He has signed a "red flag" law for gun purchases.
Vance is an ardent Second Amendment supporter. He opposes the Biden administration's stance on gun control and has received praise from the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Both candidates have expressed support for Israel. Vance has emphasized continued U.S. funding to the IDF, while Walz has condemned the killing of Palestinian civilians and pledged to hold Israel accountable for its actions.
Walz has signed a bill requiring schools to provide free menstrual products in all restrooms, including boys' bathrooms, and has designated Minnesota a "trans refuge state" for transgender individuals seeking surgical procedures and hormone prescriptions. He has also prevented the removal of books from public schools, even those with explicit material.

Vance introduced legislation to criminalize gender reassignment surgery for minors and advocates for a strict binary gender system on passports. He has opposed the movement to expand LGBTQ+ rights.
