Governor Tim Walz, a former Democratic vice presidential candidate, is facing scrutiny for his alleged ties to China, with the House Oversight Committee launching an investigation into the matter. The inquiry comes after concerns were raised about Walz's connections to an institute that did business with a Chinese military company flagged in the recently passed Biosecure Act.

The Biosecure Act, HR 8333, passed the House by a vote of 306-81, with 79 Democrats and two Republicans voting against it. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, would prohibit federal agencies from "procure or obtain any biotechnology equipment or service produced or provided by a biotechnology company of concern."
One of the companies called out in the act, Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI), has been labeled a "Chinese military company" by the Pentagon and has done extensive work with a medical research institute with deep ties to Walz, Fox News Digital previously reported.

The House Oversight Committee has requested documents related to Walz's China ties, according to The Washington Examiner. The probe has expanded since it was first announced earlier this year.
Walz has acknowledged his travels to China, including a brief stint as a teacher in Guangdong in 1989. He has made numerous trips to the country, including a honeymoon in 1994 that coincided with the fifth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown.

In an interview with Agri-Pulse Communications, Walz expressed his belief that China does not necessarily need to be an adversarial relationship. However, he also emphasized the need to stand firm against their actions in the South China Sea.
Walz has been quoted as saying that he was treated exceptionally well during his visits to China, receiving numerous gifts. The remark came in the wake of the Tiananmen Square massacre and amid ongoing mass human rights abuses by the communist regime.

The investigation into Walz's China ties is ongoing, and no charges have been filed. Critics have accused Walz of being too close to China, while his supporters maintain that he is a pragmatic leader who seeks cooperation in areas where it is possible.
The House Oversight Committee is expected to release its findings when the investigation is complete. The outcome of the probe could have implications for Walz's political future and may raise questions about the extent of Chinese influence in American institutions.
