Despite Biden's proposal for presidential debates with Trump, polls suggest that many Americans are unhappy with the potential rematch between the two septuagenarians. With former candidate Nikki Haley continuing to draw support from GOP voters and an "uncommitted" vote protesting Biden's Israel policies, both candidates face challenges in securing the support of their respective bases.
As President Biden and former President Donald Trump prepare for a potential rematch in the 2024 presidential election, warning signals are flashing for both candidates. Despite Biden's recent proposal for presidential debates with Trump in June and September, polls indicate that many Americans are far from enthusiastic about the prospect of a showdown between the two septuagenarians.
Recent Republican primaries have revealed that former candidate Nikki Haley, who suspended her campaign in March, continues to garner significant support from GOP voters. In the Indiana primary, Haley received 22% of the vote, and in Maryland and Nebraska, she secured 21% and 18% support, respectively. This suggests that Haley's exit from the race has not diminished her influence, and it could represent a potential problem for Trump in the general election.
Furthermore, a significant proportion of Democratic voters in the Maryland primary cast "uncommitted" ballots, indicating dissatisfaction with Biden's Middle East policies. This follows similar protests in other primaries, highlighting the challenges Biden faces in securing the support of his own base.
Mark Penn, a longtime Democratic pollster, argues that Biden's debate proposal reflects his weakness in the polls. "You don't want to debate when you're ahead," Penn said on Fox News. "Obviously it's uphill for President Biden, or he wouldn't be debating in the first place."
National surveys have consistently shown Biden's low approval ratings in key battleground states, further underscoring the challenges he faces in the upcoming election. The president's age, public speaking abilities, and policy positions have all come under scrutiny, contributing to the widespread dissatisfaction.
David Kochel, a veteran Republican consultant, believes that the debates could reinforce the country's dissatisfaction with the two candidates. "You're going to put the most unpopular politicians we've ever seen run against each other in front of 80 million people on a debate stage," Kochel said. "One of them is famously bombastic and toxic and loose with the facts. The other one is barely able to get out a sentence."
Analysts suggest that both Biden and Trump need to address the concerns of their base voters and expand their appeal to persuade independents and swing voters. With the election approaching, the campaigns will intensify their efforts to secure the necessary support to secure victory.
