The Washington Commanders have made LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels the second overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, marking a significant move for the franchise as they look to improve on their disappointing 4-13 record from last season.
The Washington Commanders have sparked much speculation within the NFL community after selecting LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. This move signals a significant shift for the franchise, which has struggled to find stability at the quarterback position in recent years.
Daniels, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2023, is considered one of the most talented and promising quarterbacks in the draft. In his final season at LSU, he threw for 3,812 yards, 40 touchdowns, and just four interceptions. He also rushed for 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns, showcasing his dual-threat abilities.

The Commanders have not selected a quarterback in the first round since they drafted Dwayne Haskins in 2019. However, Haskins' tenure with the team was short-lived, as he was released in 2021. Sam Howell, who was drafted in the fifth round last year, started all 17 games for the Commanders in 2022, but he struggled with consistency, throwing for 3,946 yards and 21 interceptions.
With the addition of Daniels, the Commanders hope to have found the franchise quarterback they have been searching for. Daniels will be surrounded by a talented supporting cast on offense, including receivers Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson, running back Austin Ekeler, and tight end Zach Ertz.

The Commanders also made several other moves during the offseason to improve their team. They fired head coach Ron Rivera and replaced him with Dan Quinn, who is expected to bring a more aggressive defensive scheme to the team. Washington also signed several key free agents, including Ertz, Ekeler, and cornerback Kendall Fuller.
The Commanders still have the 36th and 40th overall selections in the draft, which will be made on Friday night in the second round. These picks could be used to move up and make another selection before the first round ends.
The Commanders' selection of Daniels is a bold and ambitious move that signals the franchise's commitment to turning things around. With a talented young quarterback and several key acquisitions, the Commanders hope to contend for a playoff spot in 2023.
