As thousands of West Coast residents seek refuge in Idaho, locals express concerns over potential political and cultural changes. Despite fears, voter registration data suggests that the state is becoming increasingly conservative.

Idaho, one of the fastest-growing states in the US, is witnessing a surge in population from West Coast residents, particularly from California, Washington, and Oregon. This rapid influx has raised concerns among some locals over the potential impact on Idaho's culture and politics.

However, political data indicates that Idaho's political landscape is becoming more conservative. A 2023 analysis of voters who moved from other states shows that a significant majority register as Republicans. Californians led the pack, with 75% registering as Republicans and only 10% as Democrats.

"Politically, we are not changing anything," said Bonner County Commissioner Luke Omodt. "Idaho is actually growing redder."

Real estate agent Seth Horst, a former California police officer, believes that new residents are fleeing their home states due to oppressive laws and policies. He emphasizes the importance of educating potential movers about Idaho's culture to ensure that they share similar values.

"We get some pushback from locals and people that don't want others moving here," Horst said. "But [North Idaho is] not a secret anymore. … What's important right now is that people are educated because we want the right people moving here. We want people whose values match and don't want to come here and change the way of life."

Despite some opposition from longtime residents, the influx of new residents has also brought economic benefits to Idaho. Coeur d'Alene Mayor Jim Hammond highlights the increased economic activity and the strengthening of the community's economy.

"If we’re big enough that we can support businesses … we strengthen our own economy," he said. "We’re not going somewhere else to shop. We’re not going somewhere else for work. We’re doing that all within our community, and that means all those funds stay within our community."

However, the rapid growth has also brought housing challenges. Sandpoint Mayor Jeremy Grimm notes the significant increase in housing prices, making it difficult for locals to afford homes in their own communities.

"Although we have a very diverse economy with aerospace and food manufacturing and medical device manufacturing, at the end of the day, a lot of those jobs don't support what it takes to buy a house like this," Grimm said.

As Idaho continues to navigate the challenges and opportunities brought by the influx of West Coast residents, locals and newcomers alike are urged to work together to preserve the state's quality of life and embrace the positive aspects of growth.
