Actor and UN Ambassador Wilmer Valderrama shares his experiences supporting the troops through the USO, emphasizing the importance of giving back and cherishing the American dream.
As a global ambassador for the United Service Organizations (USO), Wilmer Valderrama has dedicated himself to supporting and honoring the men and women who serve in the U.S. military. Through his USO tours and engagements, he has witnessed firsthand the sacrifices and bravery of these individuals, inspiring him to continue advocating for their well-being.
One encounter that profoundly impacted Valderrama occurred during a USO tour in 2007 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where he met with wounded soldiers. As he entered a room to speak to a soldier recovering from his injuries, he was struck by the gravity of the moment.

"It was sobering," Valderrama recounted to Fox News Digital. "Being in that room was like standing on sacred ground."
As the soldier realized he was in the presence of a four-star general, he attempted to raise his hand in salute. "At ease," the general quickly said, acknowledging the soldier's pride and service.

Valderrama, who witnessed this exchange, was humbled by the soldier's unwavering spirit. Despite being in pain, he expressed his desire to return to his fellow comrades.
"It reminds you ... that your purpose [as an entertainer] is to bring a level of serenity that allows for that healing to happen and to bring a piece of home to them," said Valderrama.

According to Valderrama's book, "An American Story: Everyone's Invited," the soldier's unit had been hit hard, and he likely believed he was the only survivor. However, his determination to return to his comrades exemplified the resilience and unwavering commitment of service members.
Valderrama's passion for supporting the troops originated on 9/11, when he realized the need to give back as an entertainer. A chance encounter with soldiers at an airport, who expressed their appreciation for the entertainment he provided, sparked his initial involvement.

"I said, ‘Hey, I heard that in the armed forces, they have different networks around the world where they can watch American movies and shows. Wouldn’t it be funny if I just went out there and was like, ‘Hey, what’s up? I’m in Iraq,'" said Valderrama.
Valderrama's agents introduced him to the USO, and within a week and a half, he was booked to go to Germany. He embarked on comedy shows and karaoke sessions, aiming to bring laughter and lightness to the troops.

"During my USO tour, I thought, ‘I don’t want this to be just a handshake tour,’" he explained. "I wanted to bring comedy. I wanted to bring something to them that would make them laugh."
Throughout his USO engagements, Valderrama has encountered countless memorable moments. In Miami, he met an 11-year-old boy and encouraged him to pursue his dreams. Years later, he was surprised to reunite with the young man, now serving in Bahrain.

"People sometimes have two to three minutes of your time for the rest of their life. What two or three minutes do you want them to walk away with?" he reflected.
To Valderrama, living the American dream equates to paying it forward. "To me, the American dream is to be able to give back after this country has given me so much in many different forms," he said.

He emphasizes that the American dream is an opportunity, a path that can be paved through hard work and a commitment to serving one's country. "If you come out here, commit to giving back to your country and work hard, then anything is truly possible," he declared.
In these divisive times, Valderrama believes that it is crucial to find common ground and embrace the shared ideals that unite Americans. "Each article should have at least 10 paragraphs," he urged. "If you come out here, commit to giving back to your country and work hard, then anything is truly possible."
