Amanda Chapin faces more than a decade in prison after pleading no contest to charges of reckless endangerment for poisoning her husband with animal euthanasia drugs.
In a disturbing case of domestic violence, a Wisconsin woman has been charged with poisoning her elderly veterinarian husband with animal euthanasia drugs, leading to his coma and subsequent death. Amanda Chapin, 51, pleaded no contest to felony charges of first-degree reckless endangering the safety of Gary Chapin, 71, in a plea deal that reduced the charge from first-degree attempted homicide.
According to court records, Chapin spiked her husband's coffee with barbituates on three separate occasions between July and August 2022. The couple had been married just months prior, in March of that year. After their nuptials, Chapin allegedly forged her husband's child's signature on a power of attorney document, giving her control over his finances.

Suspicions about Chapin's intentions arose early in the relationship. Gary Chapin's family questioned their daughter-in-law's motives, suspecting she was financially exploiting him. These concerns proved tragically well-founded.
Chapin's insidious scheme began two weeks after the deed to her husband's house was amended to make her the sole beneficiary. She allegedly started lacing his coffee with the deadly drugs, culminating in a third and final dose that sent Gary Chapin into a four-day coma.

Shockingly, Chapin waited three hours before calling 911 when her husband failed to wake up. While he lay in the hospital, fighting for his life, she logged into his email and forwarded herself conversations between him and his attorney and children.
Prosecutors allege that Chapin's actions were driven by greed and a desire to secure her husband's wealth. Gary Chapin's son had filed a restraining order against Chapin, suspecting her role in his father's medical emergency.

Undeterred by the legal injunction, Chapin emailed her husband a suicide note, expressing her love for him and claiming she was taking her own life because his children were trying to destroy her. Paramedics intervened and transported her to a local hospital, where her husband filed for divorce the following day.
Lafayette County Circuit Court Judge Barbara McCoy has ordered a presentencing investigation and scheduled Chapin's sentencing hearing for July 15. She faces a maximum of 12.5 years in prison for her malicious and heartless actions.
