As the Connecticut Sun faced off against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever for the third time this season, Sun head coach Stephanie White reflected on the WNBA's remarkable growth, attributing much of it to the influx of talented rookies.

"Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Cameron Brink – these players engage with fans through social media, bringing a star power that resonates with our audience," White said. "Their influence extends beyond the court, contributing to our league's growing popularity."

Earlier this week, the WNBA announced a record-breaking opening month, boasting its highest attendance in 26 years and most-watched start of season ever across multiple networks. Notably, the league emphasized its "diverse audience" growth, citing a 96% increase in viewership among Hispanic fans and a 67% jump among Black fans.

Despite the notable rise in racially diverse viewership, the WNBA's decision to prioritize this statistic in its announcement raised questions. OutKick reached out to the league for comment, but a response is still pending.

Nonetheless, the WNBA credits the rookie class for its significant impact on social media engagement. "Four of the five moments that drove the most engagement on our channels featured highlights from Clark, Reese, Brink, or Kate Martin," the league stated.

White believes the WNBA's growth began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when people turned to basketball as a source of entertainment during lockdowns. "When there was nothing else to do but watch basketball, fans who might not have watched the WNBA before gave it a chance and kept coming back," she said.

This surge in viewership, combined with the influx of superstar rookies, has propelled the WNBA to new heights. "These young players are continuing this upward trajectory," White added.

Caitlin Clark has emerged as a driving force in the league's growth, capturing the attention of fans with her exceptional play. However, White acknowledges that the WNBA has been steadily growing over the past few years. "This season's growth is unprecedented, but it's not surprising given the talent we have in the league," she said.

The WNBA's continued success is a testament to its commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and showcasing the best female basketball players in the world. As the league celebrates its 26th season, it stands poised for even greater growth and impact in the years to come.
