Tiger Woods' hopes of making the weekend at the PGA Championship were dashed after two early blowup holes in the second round, leading to a 7-over finish and a missed cut.
Tiger Woods' disappointing performance at the PGA Championship continued on Friday, as he missed the cut for the second consecutive year. After finishing the first round at Valhalla 1-over par, Woods had a disastrous second round, carding two triple bogeys within the first four holes.
On the par-4 second hole, Woods' pitch shot landed in the front-side bunker, and he airmailed the green into the backside trap. He finally got on in five, but a two-putt resulted in a triple bogey. On the par-3 third hole, a three-putt added another bogey to his score.
Woods' misery continued at the par-4 fourth hole. Another shot into the sand led to a second triple bogey, putting him at 7-over for the day and well over the projected cut line of 1-under.
Despite a brief recovery with birdies on the seventh and eighth holes, Woods' hopes quickly faded away. He bogeyed 11 and 12, but salvaged a birdie on the par-5 18th. However, his 6-over 77 was not enough to advance to the weekend rounds.
This is the 13th missed cut of Woods' career at a major, nine of which have come since 2015. He has also withdrawn from two majors in that time. The missed cut comes after a dismal performance at The Masters, where Woods finished in last place with an 82 in the third round, his lowest score ever at Augusta.
The tournament is now headlined by Scottie Scheffler, who was arrested early Friday morning for second-degree assault of a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding signals from an officer. Despite the arrest, Scheffler arrived at Valhalla just 56 minutes before his tee time and shot a 5-under 66 to sit two shots off the lead.
Woods' recent struggles raise concerns about his future in competitive golf. At 47 years old and with a history of injuries, it is unclear whether he will be able to regain his former dominance. His missed cut at the PGA Championship is a stark reminder of the challenges he faces as he tries to extend his legendary career.
