Xander Schauffele emerged victorious at the PGA Championship on Sunday, becoming a major champion with a record-shattering 21-under par total.
Xander Schauffele's name will forever be etched in golf history after his remarkable triumph at the PGA Championship on Sunday. The American golfer outlasted a formidable field to claim his first major title with a record-setting performance at Valhalla Golf Club.
Schauffele's four-day total of 263 strokes is the lowest in major championship history, eclipsing the previous mark set by Henrik Stenson at the 2016 Open Championship. The 28-year-old Californian carded rounds of 65, 65, 67, and 65 to surge past a star-studded leaderboard.
In a thrilling final round, Schauffele entered the 18th hole tied with Bryson DeChambeau at 20-under. With a par save on the 17th, Schauffele knew a birdie on the par-5 18th would secure his victory.
As the crowd held their breath, Schauffele took a calculated risk, blasting his tee shot from a precarious lie in the rough above the bunker. The ball landed just short of the green, setting up a crucial approach shot.
With ice in his veins, Schauffele executed a perfect chip to leave himself a six-foot putt for the win. As Collin Morikawa finished with a birdie to reach 15-under, the stage was set for a dramatic finish.
Schauffele stepped into his putt with unwavering focus. The ball rolled true, grazing the left edge before dropping into the cup. The roar of the crowd erupted as Schauffele's arms shot into the air in celebration.
"I really didn’t want to go into a playoff against Bryson," Schauffele said, laughing after his victory.
DeChambeau, who had pressured Schauffele throughout the tournament, congratulated him on his victory. The two rivals embraced on the 18th green, acknowledging each other's exceptional performances.
Behind the top two, the rest of the field fought for position. Viktor Hovland led for a portion of the final round before finishing with a 18-under total. Thomas Detry made a late charge with a 5-under round to secure 15th place.
Billy Horschel and Scottie Scheffler made significant moves on Sunday. Horschel soared up the leaderboard with a 7-under round, while Scheffler jumped 16 spots with a 6-under performance.
Schauffele's victory marks a significant breakthrough in his career. He had come close to major success in the past, finishing tied for second in the 2019 Masters and 2018 Open Championship.
With the Wanamaker Trophy in his hands, Schauffele can now reflect on his historic achievement at Valhalla Golf Club. His name will forever be inscribed in golf's annals as one of the game's greatest.
