Xander Schauffele made history at the PGA Championship on Thursday, shooting the lowest round in the tournament's history.
Xander Schauffele has taken the PGA Championship by storm with a record-breaking performance in the opening round at Valhalla Golf Club. The 30-year-old golfer set two new records on Thursday, shooting the lowest round ever recorded in the tournament's history and setting a new course record.
Schauffele's incredible performance saw him card a 9-under 62, surpassing the previous low round of 63 set by several golfers, including Jose Maria Olazabal in the third round of the 2000 tournament, which was also held at Valhalla.
In addition to setting a new PGA Championship record, Schauffele also rewrote the Valhalla Golf Club record books. His 62 was the lowest round ever shot at the course, surpassing the previous record of 64 held by several golfers.
Schauffele's bogey-free round was characterized by his precision approach shots, which resulted in 12 one-putts. He also displayed remarkable scrambling skills, including an impressive up-and-down par save on the par-3 eighth hole.
Despite his exceptional performance, Schauffele remains cautious, knowing that three rounds remain before he can truly celebrate. "It's just one day," he said after his round. "Very happy with how I played. I can't think much more of it. I have to tee it up tomorrow."
Schauffele's closest competitor after the first round is Rory McIlroy, who finished with a 5-under 66. Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala are tied for third at 6-under, while Scottie Scheffler, who has been in formidable form recently, is lurking at 4-under.
With thunderstorms forecasted for the weekend, weather could become a factor in the remaining rounds. However, Schauffele will be looking to maintain his focus and continue posting low scores.
The PGA Championship is a marathon, not a sprint, but Schauffele has set a blistering pace with his record-breaking start. He will be hoping to sustain his momentum and emerge victorious at the end of the tournament.
