Yankees play-by-play announcer Michael Kay criticized fans who have been rooting for the crosstown rival Mets during their recent playoff run, calling them "not real Yankee fans."
New York Yankees play-by-play announcer Michael Kay has sparked a heated debate among baseball fans by criticizing those who have been rooting for the rival New York Mets during their recent playoff run.

Kay, who has been with the Yankees for over 30 years, expressed his disapproval on his radio show Friday afternoon, questioning the loyalty of fans who were cheering for the Amazins.
"Is fandom different now? Why are you rooting for the Mets if you're a Yankee fan? Are you out of your minds? Are you out of your minds?" Kay said. "Like you don't have enough good things to root for in the Bronx. Now, you're going to root for the Queens players? It doesn't make sense. It's bizarro land."

Kay's comments come after the Mets clinched a berth in the National League Division Series with a dramatic 7-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday night. The win marked the Mets' second miraculous comeback in as many days, following their 8-7 win over the San Diego Padres in the Wild Card Game.
The Yankees, meanwhile, have been idle since Sunday after sweeping the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Division Series. The contrasting fortunes of the two New York teams have led some fans to temporarily switch their allegiance to the Mets.

However, Kay is having none of it. He believes that true fans should only root for one team, regardless of their success or failure.
"Every single one of you," Kay said. "Because being a fan means something. You can't root for both. And the ones that are, they're not real Yankee fans."
Kay also pointed out that Mets fans seldom root for the Yankees, despite the fact that the Yankees have been a powerhouse for much longer.
"I've been doing this for a long time," Kay said. "I've never heard a Mets fan say, 'I'm rooting for the Yankees.' Not once."
Kay's comments have sparked a heated reaction on social media, with some fans agreeing with his stance and others accusing him of being a hypocrite.
One fan tweeted: "Kay is right. You can't root for both teams. It's one or the other."
Another fan disagreed, saying: "Who cares who fans root for? It's all about supporting baseball in New York."
Ultimately, it's up to each individual fan to decide who they want to root for. However, Kay's comments have certainly reignited the debate about fan loyalty in sports.
