YouTube has terminated the Tenet Media channel, along with four other channels operated by its owner, Lauren Chen, following an indictment by the US Department of Justice. The indictment alleges that Chen, a Canadian citizen, was involved in a criminal conspiracy to evade economic sanctions against Iran by using Tenet Media to sell access to premium content on YouTube, including copyrighted movies and TV shows.

YouTube on Thursday announced the termination of the Tenet Media channel and four additional channels operated by its owner, Lauren Chen. This action follows an indictment by the US Department of Justice, which alleges that Chen was involved in a criminal conspiracy to evade economic sanctions against Iran.

The indictment alleges that Chen, a Canadian citizen, used Tenet Media to sell access to premium content on YouTube, including copyrighted movies and TV shows. These sales allegedly violated US sanctions against Iran, as the US government prohibits the export of certain goods and services to the country.

According to the indictment, Chen used a network of shell companies to conceal her involvement in Tenet Media and its sales to Iranian customers. She also allegedly used intermediaries to collect payments from Iranian customers and transfer the funds to her own accounts.

YouTube's decision to terminate the Tenet Media channel and Chen's other channels is a significant development in the ongoing investigation into sanctions evasion against Iran. It sends a strong message that platforms like YouTube will not tolerate the use of their services to violate US laws.

The indictment against Chen is the result of a joint investigation by the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York and the FBI. Assistant US Attorney Andrew Pak is prosecuting the case.

If convicted, Chen faces a maximum of 20 years in prison for conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) and a maximum of 10 years in prison for money laundering.

The US has long maintained economic sanctions against Iran in an effort to pressure the country to comply with international nuclear non-proliferation agreements. These sanctions prohibit the export of certain goods and services to Iran, including digital content.

The case against Chen is the first known prosecution of an individual for using a social media platform to evade US sanctions against Iran. It highlights the growing importance of social media in international trade and the need for platforms like YouTube to take steps to prevent the use of their services for illegal purposes.

In a statement, YouTube said that it "takes the matter of sanctions evasion very seriously." The company said it has "a long-standing policy of complying with all applicable laws and regulations."

YouTube also said that it "will continue to work with law enforcement to ensure that our platform is not used for illegal activities."

The termination of the Tenet Media channel and Chen's other channels is a significant step in YouTube's ongoing efforts to combat sanctions evasion. It also sends a strong message to individuals who may be considering using social media platforms to violate US laws.
